For some people, the holidays can cause increased stress. If you are feeling overwhelmed, here are some strategies to help you cope.
Pay attention to what you’re feeling.
Remember that it is ok to feel unhappy during the holidays. Being able to recognize your feelings helps you address them and use positive coping skills.
Practice self-care.
Schedule “me time” to do things you enjoy and to help you relax. This may include reading a book, exercising, taking a nature walk, or practicing deep breathing and mindfulness.
Connect with your community.
Meet up with or call a supportive friend or family member. Connect with people in support groups, faith communities, or community centers. Being around caring people can help reduce feelings of loneliness.
Be a support for others.
Helping a friend or neighbor by checking in on them not only gives joy to them, but it can improve your own happiness and sense of well-being.
Don’t be afraid to seek help.
If you feel that your mental health struggles are becoming overwhelming and difficult to handle, it is important to seek help and know that treatment is available. The Four County Crisis and Resource Line is available 24/7 by calling 1-800-468-4357 (1-800-GOT-HELP). The Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is also available 24/7 by calling or texting 988.
